From Anecdotes to Evidence: Demonstrating the power of environmental education

How do we demonstrate evidence-based outcomes of EE without letting go of the passion that breathes energy into the field?

eeWORKS is a project that seeks to answer this critical question. Guided by an expert advisory board, NAAEE is partnering with Stanford University, University of California Davis, and University of Florida to demonstrate the impact and value of EE. To narrow our focus, we are conducting comprehensive research reviews and producing communications tools for several priority outcome areas. These key outcome areas were identified based on published literature and the interests of key stakeholders, such as educators, environmental organizations, policymakers, and funders. In short, we are substantiating powerful anecdotes from across the field with empirical evidence.

What is the capacity for environmental education to contribute to a more sustainable planet and society? Let eeWORKS help you answer that question.

Studies in the review demonstrated that environmental education has led to a number of positive impacts, from improving academic performance, to enhancing critical thinking skills, to developing personal growth and life-building skills including confidence, autonomy, and leadership. In addition, a number of the studies showed that environmental education increased civic engagement and positive environmental behaviors.

Well-designed climate change education can have a tremendous impact.

It is essential to helping people of all ages understand climate change and take informed action in communities around the world.

To understand the most effective strategies for climate change education, experts at the University of Florida (UF) conducted a systematic review of empirical research to explore the impact of climate change education efforts.

Researchers at Stanford University analyzed 105 peer-reviewed studies to assess environmental education’s effects on conservation outcomes. The findings suggest that environmental education helps support and sustain a range of conservation efforts, including community conservation work. It engages key audiences and helps people understand, care about, and take effective action on environmental issues.
