The Mount St. Helens Institute, founded in 1996, connects people of all ages to Mount St. Helens and our natural world through educational programming designed to enrich visitors’ appreciation and understanding of the Pacific Northwest’s youngest and most active volcano.

The Mount St. Helens Institute is a 501(c) (3) private, nonprofit organization devoted to helping people understand and protect the volcano.
We consider ourselves to be purveyors of passion and our passion is Mount St. Helens.

We advance understanding and stewardship of the Earth through science, education, and exploration of volcanic landscapes.
OUR VISION
We envision a world where all people have a meaningful connection to the Earth, living in harmony with each other and the natural world.
OUR WORK
Just like the mountain and the surrounding landscape which is forever evolving, the Institute offers new seasonal events and programs every year. Current work includes:
- Youth outdoor & science educational programs
- Classroom outreach
- Guided climbs, hikes, and outings with scientists and other experts
- Science pub lectures
- Volunteer staffing of visitor centers, climbing ranger assistance, trail work, and youth education programming.
