Hi! My name is Ella Kavanaugh and I'm from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. I am a first-year student at Oberlin College and Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio and I'm just beginning the North Carolina Environmental Education Certification process! My hope is to gain skills and experience to be the Environmental Discovery Chief at YMCA Camp Kanata in Wake Forest, NC. After this I'll continue my journey in Environmental Education, Conservation and in the NC certification process. I am planning to major in Biology and Environmental Studies at school. One day I hope to be a Conservation Biologist or something similar and make a difference for the climate and natural world. I hope gain experience working with others and with environmental education, including at Piedmont Wildlife Center summer camps and internships, and other opportunities. I love the outdoors and hope to share this with others!

I am a counselor at YMCA Camp Kanata where I worked this past summer. I helped lead activities such as canoeing, archery, nature (exploring the camp), climbing wall, and more. At camp I stayed in a cabin with campers and two other counselors. I was responsible for creative programming and problem solving!

I have other experience in a work setting such as working at Al's Burger Shack, babysitting, and teaching violin. I worked as a CIT at Kanata and at Piedmont Wildlife Center, where there is a focus on environmental education and the outdoors. I hope to engage more in the future at the Piedmont Wildlife Center, where they have positions for day camp counselors as well as education and conservation internships. I attended camp Kanata and Piedmont when I was younger.

I love to garden and visit local gardens and greenhouses with my dad whenever I'm at home. One summer I worked as a summer leader at the garden at my high school, Carrboro High School to upkeep and water and weed the garden each week. One garden I visited was the Giving Garden. I'm hoping to volunteer there this spring. Me and my dad also started a small garden at our new house.

I am looking forward to working at the Living Machine at Oberlin College, a system that filters wastewater and mimics a natural wetland. The job also incldes upkeep of grounds, water testing, and an agroforestry experiment. The Living Machine is located in the center for Environmental Studies on campus.

I also did an Outward Bound Kayaking trip relating to Environment in the Chesapeake Bay. This was a great experience and I learned about the bay and history of how pollution and other environmental factors impact it.
