I have been working in special education for the past 17 years working with students who are on the autism spectrum. In my years of teaching, I've noted that my students did not have the same opportunities for enrichment as their neurotypical peers. I decided to pursue a degree in Natural Science and Environmental Education so that I could bring that enrichment to the students in my program. I hope to create nature programming that is specifically designed for neurodiverse students. I want my students to foster connection with nature and experience the numerous mental health and sensory benefits that time spent in nature provides.
I was fortunate to grow up at a time where I could get lost in the woods without an adult in sight. I loved to explore and observe the forest. It was a place of escape and calm and wonder. I still find this same joy as often as I can. I enjoy almost all the outdoor sports that exist. Nature is still my place of calm and wonder.
