Susan is a member of the NOAA Ocean Exploration education team, managing programming that includes: ocean exploration education content development, a national educator professional development program in cooperation with 15 US Education Alliance Partners and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and cultivating ocean literacy.  Prior to arriving at NOAA Ocean Exploration, Susan was the Director for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership (CORE at the time) in Washington, D.C. She has also worked as an Education Specialist for Virginia Sea Grant at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, at Oregon Coast Aquarium, and at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Susan has been a member and served in leadership positions within the National Marine Educators Association for several decades and has served as a co-lead for the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance Ocean Literacy Working Group. 

Susan has dedicated her career to engaging marine scientists in student and teacher education and to sharing the value and excitement of ocean science and exploration with all ages.

Susan is a member of the NOAA Ocean Exploration education team, managing programming that includes: ocean exploration education content development, a national educator professional development program in cooperation with 15 US Education Alliance Partners and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and cultivating ocean literacy. Her office currently focuses a significant portion of their education programming on the science and expeditions associated with the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer, America’s first and only Federal ship of exploration. Prior to arriving at NOAA Ocean Exploration, Susan was the Director for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership (CORE at the time) in Washington, D.C. She has also worked as an Education Specialist for Virginia Sea Grant at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, at Oregon Coast Aquarium, and at the National Aquarium in Baltimore.

Susan has been a member of the U.S. National Marine Educators Association since 1988, served as the 2013-2014 President of the organization, received the NMEA President’s Award in 2015, and currently serves as the co-chair for the NMEA International Committee. Susan has attended and presented at European Marine Science Educators (EMSEA) conferences, assisted in the initial development of EMSEA-Med, participated in historic Transatlantic Ocean Literacy (TOL) efforts in Sweden and Denmark, and served as the U.S. co-lead for the All-Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance Ocean Literacy Working Group.

Susan has dedicated her career to engaging marine scientists in student and teacher education and to sharing the value and excitement of ocean science and exploration with all ages.
