We are happy to be translating Volume 3 from Travels in Brazil, the Martius-Spix expedition 1817-20 . Our Eco education program, Remember the Rainforest 1, is based on the work of the rainforest explorers of the 1800s, the Age of Collectors. Volume 3, the part about the Amazon was lost in a fire in London in 1824. Soon all of the italicized words will have links to their images, just as they do in Volumes 1 and 2.

Rock and Pebble Painting
A STEM/STEAM Project --Subjects focused: Science and Art

Activity: Both Outdoor & Indoor
Objectives:
Allow children and students to find rocks and pebbles during nature walk to the park or school yard and let them learn to discover properties like hard, soft, rough, and smooth etc. through touching and engaging in discussions with peers and teachers.
Science Activity:
Engage students in STEM and STEAM learning to identify rocks and pebbles during nature walk, allow discussions about the shape, size, color and surface texture of the rocks and pebbles and ask students to collect few rocks and pebbles to paint.
Materials Required:
Rocks, pebbles, paint, glitter, glue, feathers and other materials to decorate.

This lesson plan is geared towards grades 6-8 and covers biodiversity in the East Asian rainforest, the destructive effects of palm oil production on this rainforest, and how everyone can help protect the habitat of critically endangered orangutans, Sumatran tigers, and Sumatran rhinoceri.

This playful lesson plan includes three hands-on activities designed to grow young learners’ understanding of the relationships between plants and pollinators, and spark their interest in these important living things. Students will play a matching game to discover why hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies choose the flowers they do, “fly” pollinators around the classroom in search of nectar, and use their senses to explore diversity in nature. This lesson plan is made to be adapted, and includes suggestions for extensions and additions to fit the needs of every classroom.

AK EnergySmart (AKES) is a free K-12 curriculum designed by Alaskans to raise energy literacy in the Arctic. Through interdisciplinary lessons that investigate how energy is all around them, why we need energy and how energy can be conserved, this curriculum gives students valuable insights they can pass along to their families. The lessons guide youth to a better awareness of how they use energy, and the importance of taking measures to use energy wisely both at home and school. AK EnergySmart lessons are broken into K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 lessons that are all available online to download for free.
