Tree Dreams is an interdisciplinary lesson that invites K-8 students to explore the basic structure of trees, consider their function, explore natural networks and understand their own impact on and interconnection with the natural world. Free, downloadable lesson plans are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core for Language Arts.

Produced by Project Learning Tree (PLT) in collaboration with the US Forest Service, Teaching with i-Tree is designed to engage middle and high school students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) as they calculate the economic and environmental benefits of trees.

The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) is an independent, marine industry-led entity that engages industry, regulators, environmental groups, educators and the public by promoting sound environmental practices. NAMEPA is a non-profit organization committed to “Save Our Seas” and preserving the marine environment through educating seafarers, students and the public about the need, and strategies for, protecting global ocean resources.

Beyond Doom and Gloom: Engage in Climate and Energy Solutions is a timely, no cost learning prototype for higher education faculty and high school teachers. This resource is offered by the Disciplinary Associations Network for Sustainability (DANS), which includes 45 organizations such as the Society for Conservation Biology, American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, American Psychological Association, American Academy of Religion and Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

How much life can your students find in one cubic foot? Help your classes explore the biodiversity around them with this biology project from Smithsonian. The website includes instructions for making your own cubic-foot sampling tool, and collecting and sharing biodiversity data and photos.

FoodSpan is a free high school curriculum developed by the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future about food and how it gets from farms to forks. Features include: 17 inquiry-based lesson plans, 2 short films, and 100+ activities and extensions that can serve as homework assignments or group projects. FoodSpan lessons are aligned to national education standards, relevant to students’ lived experiences, easy-to-use, and customizable. Educators can choose to work through the entire curriculum or teach stand-alone lessons on topics of interest like food waste, agroecology, or climate change.
