Join Cornell University’s Civic Ecology Lab for a 4-week global online course, “Advancing Environmental Education Practice” (January 5–30). Designed for environmental educators and practitioners, this course helps you clarify what you want your programs to achieve, understand how change happens, and build evidence-based pathways from activities to outcomes using theory of change and backward planning.

You’ll learn with Professor Marianne Krasny, a Cornell professor and leading scholar in environmental education, whose book on environmental education outcomes will be made available to participants. You’ll engage with case examples from around the world and contribute your own program for feedback in interactive online workshops and optional live webinars.

What you’ll do

  • Define clear environmental and sustainability education outcomes for learners, organizations, communities, and society.
  • Develop or refine a theory of change and outcome map for one of your own programs.
  • Use backward planning to align activities, outcomes, and evaluation strategies.
  • Discuss your environmental education or related experiences, receive feedback from the instructor and peers, and improve your education program.

Format & time commitment

  • 4 weeks of asynchronous modules (videos, readings, and guiding questions) plus 1 week to finalize your project.
  • Optional live webinars with invited experts and interactive workshops that draw on participant case studies (recorded for later viewing).
  • Approx. 25 professional development hours in total.

Audience

Environmental and sustainability educators in schools, nonprofits, nature centers, parks, zoos, aquariums, community organizations, government agencies, universities, and other settings who want to plan more effective, outcomes-based programs.

Credential & fees

  • Credential: Cornell University digital certificate documenting 25 hours of professional development.
  • Course fee: $90 for participants residing in developed economies and China; $20 for participants from all other countries.
  • A limited number of need-based scholarships may be available.
