Foundation Year in Goethean Science: Encountering Nature and the Nature of Things

Foundation Year Course in Goethean Science:

"Encountering Nature and the Nature of Things"

The non-profit Nature Institute of Ghent, NY is now taking applications for its next year-long training in experiential, contextual, and qualitative methods to encounter and understand nature.

This low-residency program will give a grounding in what Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the 18th-century German poet, scientist, and statesman, called “delicate empiricism.” Goethean methodology involves a rigorously holistic approach to learning directly from the phenomena of nature.

The course begins with a two-week intensive at The Nature Institute in June, 2019. It concludes with a second two-week intensive in Summer, 2020. Each intensive will include:

  • Guided explorations: The senses and sense experience; the qualities of the living world; the process of knowing and the experience of thinking; methods of phenomenological inquiry; understanding the nature and power of abstract thought
  • Text studies to deepen the understanding of phenomena-based contextual science
  • Artistic work to heighten our faculties of perception and imagination
  • Field trips

Throughout the year in between, participants will be mentored in their own guided study and individual practice, and will also share ongoing study with other participants. Of special interest for environmental educators.

The deadline to apply: February 15, 2019.

Limited scholarship funds are available. More details can be found here.
