2020 Region 10 Tribal Environmental Leader’s Summit (TELS)

September 23-25, 2020
Downtown Hilton - Anchorage, AK

Region 10 is home to 271 Federally Recognized Tribes in the states of Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Each year we locate the summit in a different state in our region, rotating through to provide equitable accessibility and representation.

  • In 2017 we were hosted by the Suquamish and S’Klallam tribes in Western Washington
  • In 2018 the Coeur d’Alene Tribe hosted our summit in Worley, Idaho
  • In 2019 we met in the greater Portland area, where the opening blessing was conducted by Chariman Delores Pigsley of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians
  • The 2020 Summit brings us to Anchorage, Alaska at the forefront of the catastrophic effects of climate change.

Is your tribe or organization interested in hosting this year’s Summit?

We welcome all questions and encourage you to submit a statement of interest here. You will be contacted to discuss any questions you may have, benefits, possible costs associated, and of financial assistance we might be able to provide to hosting tribes. The level of involvement as a host is fully within your hands. Generally hosting tribes will bless each day with an opening from an elder, and sometimes hosts choose to offer attendees the opportunity to experience their traditional foods, dancing, songs and language. We are honored to work with any tribe or tribal organization to help outline a unique experience that is appropriate and desired by you.

This summit provides the tribes in Region 10 the opportunity to come together in the mornings, side by side, as one large group to share and learn from each other on important aspects of managing the life-force of our communities and the physical environment. Then in the afternoons, there will be breakout sessions.  This Summit is organized by the Region 10 Tribal Operations Committee, with grant funding from the US Environmental Protection Agency Indian General Assistance Program.

Two Tracks:  General Summit (Age 18+) & Youth (Ages 14-17)

In addition to the daily sessions, we will host a cultural night to celebrate the diverse Alaska Native traditions and food. Details to be announced.

On the last day, we will present the Region 10 Tribal Environmental Excellence Award to a professional, tribal program, university or others that have supported environmental protection in Region 10.

We look forward to engaging with you and making some positive movement toward the protection and preservation of our environment for generations to come.
