Research in Outdoor Education - Call for Papers
Research in Outdoor Education (ROE), published by Cornell University Press (CUP), is soliciting manuscripts. ROE, the official journal of the Coalition for Education in the Outdoors, is a peer-reviewed, scholarly journal seeking to support and further outdoor education and its goals, including personal growth and moral development, team building and cooperation, outdoor knowledge and skill development, environmental awareness, education and enrichment, and research that directly supports systematic assessment and/or evidence-based advances in outdoor education. The Journal appeals to researchers, practitioners, teachers and post-secondary students through the exploration and discussion of diverse perspectives on the theoretical, empirical, and practical aspects of outdoor education in its broadest sense.
Professionals, students, and academics are encouraged to present original research, practice perspectives, reviews, conceptual and theoretical papers, student papers, and brief research reports. ROE follows the sixth edition of the American Psychological Association (APA) Style Manual as the preparation and submission guide. Articles undergo a blind review process by referees with expertise appropriate to the particular submission. The review process takes approximately six to eight weeks.
The central criteria for publication are that the material is (a) germane to the topic of outdoor education; (b) theoretically, empirically, or practically based; and (c) substantive in the sense of proposing, discovering, or replicating knowledge in the field of outdoor education.
ROE requires that authors avoid language that could be interpreted as discriminatory in any way. For guidelines, see the most current APA Style Manual.
Guidelines, Submissions, and Editorial Policy
Manuscripts presenting research, exploring significant developments, or describing areas of practical interest in outdoor education (as outlined above) are welcomed. Full papers should be a maximum of 6,000 words in length, including the abstract and all references, and follow the presentation of a normal research article (introduction, literature review, method, results and discussion). Research notes (1000-2000 words inclusive), following the above format, are also considered for publication. All submissions will be accepted under the condition that their content is not being submitted for publication elsewhere and is not already published.
Note: Manuscripts submitted for review by April 1, 2019 will be considered for the 2019 issue of ROE (Volume 17).
Submissions for consideration for publication in ROE should be submitted as an attachment in Microsoft Word format via email to the editors (tim.oconnell@brocku.ca or garrett.hutson@brocku.ca) following these guidelines:
1. Manuscripts must be submitted in English with margins of one inch (2.54 cm) on all sides. Pages should be numbered pages consecutively throughout. The first page should include the full title of the paper (no longer than 12 words), the name of each author, the title of each author (e.g., Assistant Professor, Director), the affiliation of each author, the e-mail address of each author, the mailing address and phone number of the principal author, and a word count for the manuscript. The first page of text should begin with the full title of the paper, the abstract, and NOT include the name(s) of the author(s). For purposes of peer review, all information identifying the author(s) within the text, citations, and document properties should be removed.
2. The abstract should follow the title page and includes the title of the manuscript, but NOT the name(s) of the author(s). Abstracts should address the following: purpose, methodology, conclusions and implications of the research, study or report. Abstracts must be 200 words or less. Please include 3-5 keywords on the abstract page.
3. Suitable headings following APA Style Manual guidelines should be used to help organize the manuscript. Standard headings for research articles (both quantitative and qualitative) include the introduction, review of literature, method, results, discussion, and references. Authors submitting other types of papers are asked to use appropriate headings that help organize the paper and assist the reader in understanding the content of the manuscript.
4. Tables should be embedded in the document and follow sixth edition APA Style Manual format (e.g., titled and numbered consecutively at the top of the table).
5. Figures and other line art (including charts, graphs, diagrams, black-and-white drawings, most maps, and other art containing no shades of gray or variations in tone) should be submitted as follows:
a. Figures must be numbered consecutively with a title at the bottom of the figure (see the sixth edition of the APA Style Manual for specifics). Fonts used in figures and other line art should be the same used in the text.
b. Placement of line art must be indicated in the manuscript (e.g., ).
c. Each item must be submitted as a file separate from the manuscript and labeled according to its placement in the manuscript. For example, the file with Figure 1 in Smith’s manuscript should be submitted as: Smith Figure 1.
d. Simple figures, line art and maps should be prepared in a recent (latest or prior release) version of Adobe Illustrator or Freehand. These files should be formatted as EPS, with fonts embedded or included separately and saved as Mac-compatible files. Figures must be vector-based and rendered in black and white with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi at an output size of 4 x 5 inches (10.16 cm x 12.7 cm). Line art that is scanned (rather than drawn) must be at a minimum resolution of 1200 dpi. The narrowest acceptable line weight is .3.
6. Authors are responsible for obtaining and providing evidence of written permission for reprinted or adapted tables/figures/line art or for inclusion of substantial quotes of other’s work. See the APA Style Manual for guidelines.
7. All citations and references must be complete and accurate and should follow the sixth edition of the APA Style Manual. Please review the manuscript and reference list carefully to ensure citations in text appear in the reference list and all references appear as citations in the body of the manuscript.
8. If ethical clearance for research with human subjects was obtained, please include a statement indicating such in the manuscript.
Research Note Submissions
Research notes are not full papers, but present a briefer examination of theoretical perspectives, new ideas, programs of research, methodological contexts/approaches, reviews of literature or initial findings from a study. When writing a research note, it is important to focus on how/why the content furthers the understanding of outdoor education and that it brings an innovative perspective to readers. The purpose of a research note is to serve as a spawning point for new thinking, approaches to research, or preliminary results from contemporary studies in outdoor education.
Research notes follow the submission guidelines for normal manuscripts except for word count. Research notes must be between 1000 and 2000 words (all inclusive).
No fee is associated with consideration or publication.
