Wild Whatcom's Open Call for Board & Volunteer Committees
Wild Whatcom, an outdoor education non-profit for all ages located in Bellingham, Washington, is excited to announce an open call for community members to join our Board and Volunteer Committees.
Wild Whatcom’s committees provide advice, thought partnership, and added capacity for our staff. These committees also expand the diverse perspectives we need when making decisions about the growth and development of our organization. We seek a leadership team that represents the broad diversity of the youth and families we serve, and we encourage people of color, LGBTQ individuals, individuals with disabilities, and those with no prior board experience to apply. We are committed to strong onboarding practices focused on relationship building and supporting newcomers to board and volunteer service.

We are looking for individuals who will participate in the following committees:
- Committees with in-person monthly meetings:
- DEVELOPMENT & OUTREACH COMMITTEE: This group of volunteers, staff, and board members helps build awareness and support for Wild Whatcom's mission and programs. The work is project-based and includes research, planning, and communicating with individuals, businesses, and organizations in the communities we serve. This role has a suggested one-year term.
- FINANCE COMMITTEE: This group of board members, volunteers, and staff supports our staff leadership and board in financial tracking and planning. This group reviews the budget and financial projections as well as supports conversations around financial planning, investing, and staff changes. This role has a suggested one-year term.
- GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE: This group meets as needed to support preparation for our annual board retreat, annual review of the Executive Director, and overall board and committee functioning, recruiting, and onboarding. This role has a suggested one-year term.
- Committees that are virtual and/or have ad-hoc meetings (not a standing meeting, but rather provide support as events/opportunities arise):
- GRANT REVIEW COMMITTEE: This role is for those who want to support from afar. This group helps with writing and editing grants when needed. Our team reaches out via email to this group to ask for help about 1-2 times per quarter.
- EVENTS COMMITTEE: This group of volunteers helps us with community events when they can. This can include helping spread the word beforehand, joining us at a Wild Whatcom table, and/or supporting day-of logistics. We email out requests mostly during spring, summer, and fall.
- ADVISORY COUNCIL: This group gives their time by responding to periodic requests for feedback that provides Wild Whatcom staff and board with information about the community’s needs. We’re particularly looking for parents, educators, and individuals with personal or professional experience creating more inclusive spaces for people with physical or cognitive disabilities, youth from low-income and/or multi-language families, and other underrepresented individuals in the outdoor education field.
