The Fulbright - National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship is hosting a series of environmental education digital media contests for students in 2017-18 to promote sustainability through the arts.
Starting October 15th, 2017, every three weeks, a contest theme will be announced, and students will have the opportunity to create a visual or performing arts project on the environmental sustainability theme and share it digitally with the #MyWasteMyWay. Winners will have their work showcased on the National Geographic Voices Blog, and receive a prize, including reusable utensils, thermos, recycled bags, pens and drink containers.
The goal is to inspire students to actively think about their role within the waste ecosystem and apply design-thinking skills to waste management & sustainability themes. Educators can also use these contests as a means of supplementing their lessons plans and course units as a fun, interactive, and consistent frequent assessment tool. The contest meets Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) ESS-3 & 4: Earth and Human Activity, applicable to K-5, Middle School & High School.
The first contest theme is: "Redefining Waste - Use your trash to create a bold recycled masterpiece!"
