    The demands of the growing human population are putting increasing environmental pressures on the planet. Environmental scientists must accurately identify and clearly articulate these challenges so that individuals and governments can take action.

    Biology, forestry, ecology, hydrology, geology, and meteorology are just some of the subjects in this multifaceted course of study.

    Environmental Science majors work closely on research projects and internships with professors, as well as with professionals, in a variety of settings, including our 491 acre Claytor Nature Study Center.

    This certificate program provides you the opportunity to complete an integrated sequence of coursework that is consistent with VDOE requirements for an add-on endorsement in earth science.

    The program is designed to meet the needs of:

    • Secondary school teachers who already have an endorsement in one of the other sciences (biology, chemistry, or physics)
    • Teachers who are seeking to strengthen their background knowledge of earth science content
    • Individuals in the non-school sector seeking to advance their knowledge of scientific content and principles
