ESA Entomology Lesson Plans, Projects, and Resources
Bring bugs to your next lesson! This collection includes science fair projects that won the Entomological Foundation's science fair project competition (discontinued in 2015) as well as lesson plans contributed by members of the Entomological Society of America. In addition to some all-age resources, there are projects for students in elementary school, middle school, and high school.
Some examples of elementary school projects include using straws and sponges to mimic insect mouthparts, painting with maggots, and trapping insects in your own backyard. Middle schoolers get to solve a whodunit mystery using insect larvae, investigate what best attracts ants, and learn more about the endangered American burying beetle. High school activities incorporate a bit more data, with a website for bringing actual data into the classroom, an exploration into the relationship between plant richness and arthropod richness and abundance, and a look at honey bee behavioral ecology.
Those were just a few examples of what's included—have a look at the full collection to see what you might want to introduce to your class!
