The IOOS K-12 Education Toolkit was created through collaboration with the IOOS Association, UCAR Center for Science Education, and UCAR Center for Ocean Leadership. Available in English and Spanish, it was developed to help students learn about ocean observation, particularly in the contexts of coastal hazards, ecosystem changes, and food from the ocean. This toolkit leverages existing resources from the IOOS Regional Associations to provide a collection of activities that help students learn about ocean observing from the perspective of different regions and communities. Each of the seven activities can be completed as a stand-alone learning experience, or they can be combined and completed in any order. Where possible, we have provided suggestions for adapting to different regional contexts and learning needs, providing a customizable learning experience.

The activities are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and Ocean Literacy Principles, allowing students to build and demonstrate their understanding of key ocean-related concepts. Each activity also includes comprehensive background information, and is adjusted for different age and grade levels.
