Urban Fly Fishing: Education Through Fly Fishing in Our Cities

Urban Fly Fishing in the LA River

Hello NAAEE community,

My name is Marc Fryt, an urban fly fishing instructor and author, and I’m excited to share some ideas from my forthcoming book, The Guide to Urban Fly Fishing (April 2026).

At its core, the book is about expanding how we think about nature, access, and environmental learning. Fly fishing is often imagined as something that happens in remote, “wild” places, but the truth is that millions of people live near urban rivers, lakes, ponds, and coastlines. These urban waters are more than background infrastructure or aesthetic choices—they are living systems that can become classrooms, gathering places, and sites of stewardship.

Through stories, photos, and practical guidance, the book introduces readers to the idea of urban fly fishing: how to discover fish in overlooked waters, how to read urban waterscapes through the lens of ecology, and how to use a fishing rod as a tool for connection—to local habitats, to communities, and to the larger questions of livable cities. Along the way, it emphasizes inclusivity, accessibility, and the idea that everyone should have the chance to experience wonder and discovery in their everyday environment.

I see strong resonance with environmental education:

  • Fishing can open doors to teaching ecology, hydrology, entomology, engineering, sociology, etc. in ways that are hands-on and memorable.
  • Urban waters provide a practical, place-based entry point into conversations about infrastructure, pollution, stewardship, and advocacy.
  • For young people especially, catching a fish in their own neighborhood can spark curiosity and agency that extends far beyond recreation.

I would love to hear from this community: How do you see opportunities to use local waters—whether through fishing or other forms of interaction—as part of your teaching and engagement?

Thank you for the work you do, and I look forward to connecting.

Warm regards,
Marc Fryt
